Sports Injuries

While participation in sports is a great way to maintain physical health, there can unfortunately be a downside to it in the form of injuries. Fortunately, physiotherapists are fully trained in assessing, diagnosing and treating these injuries to get you back out on the field as soon as possible.

Sports Injuries can occur in any part of the body and to any type of structure in the body. Examples of this include muscle tears rom heavy running loads, ligament damage as a result of joint sprains or collision injuries, tendon damage as a result of overuse or poor technique and bone damage from collision injuries.

While every injury is different and will require different treatments and exercises to rehabilitate them, there are some rules that can apply to most sporting injuries. Following injury it is best to follow the 'RICE' principle until you are seen by a physiotherapist. RICE stands for:

Rest - avoid further damage to the area by stopping the activity that caused it.
Ice - apply an ice pack to the area for 20 minutes every 2 hours for 2 - 4 days following injury. This will help to relieve pain and more importantly stop bleeding and reduce inflammation in the area.
Compression - apply a compression bandage to the area if possible to minimize swelling.
Elevation - if you can, raise the area up above the level of your heart (eg. lie down on the ground and put your foot up on a chair to elevate your leg if you have an ankle or knee injury). This will help to reduce swelling in the area.

While following this principle will help to control the damage caused by the injury, it is important to follow up as soon as possible with your physiotherapist to properly diagnose the injury and start your programme to rehabilitate the area appropriately. Occasionally injuries will require medical or surgical interventions if a return to sport is the goal and in these cases your physiotherapist can guide you in the right direction in terms of referrals to specialists.

Here at Think Physio, our physiotherapists are all active sportspeople themselves and as such have a good understanding of sports injuries and the best ways to recover and return to sport.
