Trigger Point Dry-Needling
Trigger Point Dry needling is a treatment technique which involves the use of acupuncture needles which are inserted into specific areas of muscle. A physiotherapist will first palpate (feel) various muscle groups around a reported area of pain to locate any tight bands or "knots". These tight bands within the muscle are called trigger points and are often the cause of pain and dysfunction.
The acupuncture needle is carefully placed directly into the trigger point with the aim of producing a "twitch response". This is an involuntary contraction of the affected muscle and is a favourable response to the treatment. The sudden contraction of the muscle releases chemicals which improve blood flow into the affected muscle, as well as causing the muscle to release and relax.
The result can be a decrease in pain, improved flexibility or increased range of movement.
This form of therapy may benefit people with spinal pain caused by overactive or tight muscles as well as those returning to sport from muscle strains (eg hamstring tears). Tennis elbow, shoulder pain, sciatica, headache and various other common complaints may be successfully treated with Trigger Point Dry Needling.
Some people may find the twitch response uncomfortable or even a little painful, while some people simply have a fear of needles. Hence this technique may not be appropriate for everyone.
